Bricks, Stones and Mortars have a complex pore structure in which the diameters of the pores varies widely. This has an important effect on the height to which the damp will extend because, the smaller the pores the greater the vertical rise of moisture. Old walls may contain pores as small as .001 m diameter , which can support a column of water far higher than 1 mt. Masonary walls built from brick, blockwork or porous stone which stand in water or saturated soil and which have been built without a physical barrier to the upward movement of moisture, can have rising damp to a height in excess of 1 mt. The height of dampness depends on several factors including:

  • Rate of evaporation from the wall
  • Pore sizes of the masonary
  • Salt content both of the material and from the soil
  • Groundwater level and degree of saturation
  • Use of heating within the property Breathing, Bathing, Clothes washing, Kitchens, Bathrooms all generate moisture.

Water vapours produced by these means is carried by warm air. When the air cools the water vapour is deposited as water droplets especially against colder surfaces. Fungal spores, ever present in the atmosphere, will germinate on damp surfaces and gather together as black of grey “mould” on damp surfaces. Thus giving rise to the typical condensation damp appearance. Following are the ill effects of Rising dampness:

  • Dampness gives rise to breeding of mosquitoes and create unhealthy conditions.
  • Travel of moisture on walls causes unsighty patches.
  • It may cause softening and crumbling of plaster.
  • Wall decoration and paint is damaged.
  • Continuous presence of moisture in walls may cause Efflorescence which result in disintegration of bricks, stones, tiles, etc.

We can provide the best solution for this kind of problems at very reasonable prices.
